Interpretation of Inhalation Airflow Measurements for Respirator Design and Testing
نویسندگان
چکیده
ecent studies and much debate have focused on quantifying the airflow requirements of respirator users, particularly under conditions of very high to maximal work rates. It is often assumed that respirators and their components must be tested at flow rates that closely match these measurements to assure protection to users. This overly simplified assumption ignores the differences between laboratory tests and the workplace conditions in which respirators are used. While respirators and their components could be designed to comply with any airflow requirement, any change in performance requirements must first be evaluated to ensure it does not decrease workplace performance or user comfort. This paper suggests appropriate use of airflow measurements in setting respirator performance criteria and evaluating user protection. Available data do not suggest a need for change in testing criteria at this time. There is no indication that respirators that meet current U.S. approval criteria or substantially similar tests need performance enhancement to provide acceptable protection.

Efficacy of three face masks in preventing inhalation of airborne contaminants in dental practice.
BACKGROUND Up-to-date studies are needed on the protection provided by face masks used by dentists. We assessed the relative filtering efficacy of two currently used surgical face masks (one a molded mask, the other a tie-on mask) and a certified personal particulate respirator, all made by a single manufacturer. METHODS The authors sprayed bicarbonate particulate against a porcelain surface ...
متن کاملA novel approach to fit testing of the N95 respirator in real time in a clinical setting
The instant measurements provided by the Portacount fit-test instrument have been used as the gold standard in predicting the protection of an N95 respirator in a laboratory environment. The conventional Portacount fit-test method, however, cannot deliver real-time measurements of face-seal leakage when the N95 respirator is in use in clinical settings. This research was divided into two stages...
متن کاملRespiratory Source Control Using Surgical Masks With Nanofiber Media
BACKGROUND Potentially infected individuals ('source') are sometimes encouraged to use face masks to reduce exposure of their infectious aerosols to others ('receiver'). To improve compliance with Respiratory Source Control via face mask and therefore reduce receiver exposure, a mask should be comfortable and effective. We tested a novel face mask designed to improve breathability and filtratio...
متن کاملTesting Low Doses of Caffeine on Respiratory Resistance Using the Airflow Perturbation Device
Research reports on pulmonary function measurements often mention caffeine abstinence as a condition for testing subjects. Yet, the effects of caffeine on respiration are not well documented. This study was intended to investigate the physiological effects of caffeine on respiratory resistance measurements and the necessity of caffeine avoidance in such testing. Thirty-one subjects were adminis...
متن کاملCharacterization of a head-only aerosol exposure system for nonhuman primates.
A well-characterized exposure chamber is necessary to generate reproducible atmospheres for inhalation toxicology studies. The aim of the present study was to characterize a head-only exposure chamber for non-human primates. Aerosols containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used to characterize a 16-L dynamic airflow head-only exposure chamber. A 250-ml plastic bottle with a respirator attach...
